Last Orders

I’m determined to be on top of things this Christmas period. I opened the cupboard this morning and realised that I had run out of Golden Syrup. It was very easy for me to replace this quickly with a quick ‘pretty please’ to my husband, also known as Mr Delights, who popped out to the local shop for me.  But it dawned on me, what if I had a cake order to fulfil over Christmas, and I had run out of something important, that I could run to the local shop to buy. So here’s a gentle reminder to myself and to my fellow bakers.   Today’s the day to make any last orders for things you might need for your baking over the Christmas period, whether you bake for family or friends or professionally.  Check your larders, cupboards, fridges and anywhere you store things and make sure you have enough of the following:

  • Birthday candles and glitter toppers
  • Cake boards, drums and boxes
  • Cupcake cases and boxes
  • Sugarpaste – fondant
  • Sugar flower paste (SFP)
  • Air brush colours
  • Gel colours – to colour fondant and cake batter
  • Modelling paste
  • Edible glitters, lustres and sprays
  • Edible decorations and edible prints
  • Piping bags
  • Cake release
  • Greaseproof paper
  • Flavourings and extracts
  • Moulds and cutters
  • Edible pearls and diamonds
  • Isomalt
  • Ribbons
  • Candy melts
  • Cookie bags
  • Chocolate callets for ganache
  • Modelling chocolate
  • Cake dummies
  • Sweet treats and chocolates for drip cakes

Basically, make a list of the things you might need over the next two weeks, which you can’t nip out to the shops or supermarket to buy and get online and place those orders.

Then as you are doing your food shopping, make sure you have a supply of baking ingredients:

  • Flour – Self raising, Plain, Gluten free
  • Sugar – all the types you use, especially if you use special types like Dark Brown Sugar, or Golden Caster Sugar, Icing Sugar or Royal Icing Sugar
  • Butter or Margarine
  • Bicarbonate of Soda
  • Baking Powder
  • Don’t forget your Spice Girls – Cinnamon, Ginger, Mixed Spice, Nutmeg
  • Vanilla extract
  • Eggs

Whatever your hand finds to do

Right, we’re ready and we’ve got this.  Happy baking, over this festive period!
